December 2011 Events on Maui

It’s already the second week of December! I can’t believe how close we are to Christmas Day!  There are many holiday events going on in the island, and we’ve selected some of them that we think our readers and guests will enjoy:

1.  5th Annual Makawao Holiday Celebration –  Saturday, December 10th Makawao will have a full day of fun and festivities for the whole family.  11:00 a.m. Seabury Marching Band and Santa Claus will come into town.  At 12:00 we will paint the town’s largest mural, a make your own wreath station, free pony rides, free massages, and music from King K and Kalama Intermediate School musical groups.  At 5:30 Auntie Rose will light the famous star in the tallest Norfolk Pine, and the shops and restaurants will stay open late for shopping and dining. Please come and be part of painting the mural, for elementary school age, and when dry the mural will be cut and sold to benefit the Makawao Elementary School. : Santa is at the Library, and the mural will be painted in Designing Wahine’s Parking Lot.  It promises to be a wonderful day with Santa at the Library all day to chat with children of all ages.  Please come and join us for a full day of holiday celebration.  Contact: Judy Mertens  Phone: 808 572 6877  Email: judy@anuheaflowers.com

2. Christmas Concert: A Symphony of Carols – The spirit of Christmas comes alive during A Symphony of Carols on Saturday, December 10, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm . The evening brings The Maui Concert Chorus and the University of Hawaii Maui College Chorus together to perform seasonal classics with a special solo performance by Robert E. 3. Stand Up for the Whales –  Sunday, December 11,  8:00 am to 11:30 am Get your paddle on! Be part of a “paddle powered pod” at this Maui Whale Festival event for paddlers, including kayakers and stand-up paddlers, sponsored by Pacific Whale Foundation. Enjoy a 3.2 mile group paddle along the beautiful South Maui coast, starting at Haycraft Park in Ma’alaea at 8 am and ending at Kenolio Park in Kihei. Paying participants will receive a free Pacific Whale Foundation rash guard and medallion, and will be entered in prize drawings and giveaways. Entry fee: $50 for adults; $42 for Pacific Whale Foundation Members. Youth (ages 12 – 15) are $40. Children under age 12 are free, but must be accompanied by a legal guardian (and will not receive the free rash guard.)  Parent waiver is required for participants age 13 – 18.  Join the fun and adventure of this recreational event and learn about Pacific Whale Foundation’s “Be Whale Aware” educational program for all ocean users.  Course is not timed.  Only non-motorized craft may enter.  No swimmers, please.  Return shuttle to Ma’alaea will be provided.  4. Kapalua Tennis Garden’s Inaugural Mixed Doubles Winter Championship is on Sunday, December 11th, 2011  Opened in 1979, Kapalua Tennis Garden is sculpted out of lush tropical foliage with stunning views. The hillsides bloom in a profusion of color. A perfect backdrop for the ten plexipave courts paired in tiered clusters; four lighted for night play. Each set of courts is secluded in landscaped privacy with its own viewing lanai.  Hours of operation:  Monday – Friday: 8 am – 12 pm and 3 pm – 6 pm  Saturday & Sunday: 8 am – 4 pm  Garden’s   Cost: $12 plus tax per person Email: tennisgarden@kapalua.com

5. Twelve Days of FISH-mas – December 14 -25  “Scuba” Claus and his Elf will make a special appearance at Maui Ocean Center.  The pair will make daily visits to the aquarium’s 750,000-gallon Open Ocean exhibit and host dive link presentations.  Wearing a special dive mask, he will be easily be able to communicate with the audience. Moreover, December will be filled with kid-friendly events, holiday entertainment, craft vendors, and special presentations, including a naturalist presentation that focus on Hawaii’s marine creatures named for their holiday-like appearances, including the Angelfish, Christmas Wrasse, Snowflake Eel, Candy Cane Shrimp, and more.  You’re guaranteed to have a holly, jolly FISH-mas.

6.  First Light Castle Theatre, Kahului – December 14,16-18,20-23, 26-30  The Maui Film Festival continues its winter film-screening program at Maui Arts and Cultural Center main theatre. For more information call 808 242 7469 or go to: http://www.Mauifilmfestival.com.

7. Grand Wailea’s 2nd Annual Holiday Event – Dec. 17  This year, the ritzy Grand Wailea hotel will host a holiday soiree in their Haleakala Ballroom on December 17, 2011. It will be a glamorous night filled with hors d’oeuvres, booty-shaking DJ music and Vegas-style casino games. Between sipping cocktails and placing bets at the roulette and craps tables, you can register to win giveaways from the hotel including goodies from Spa Grande (their renowned resort spa), dining for two and a trip to Sin City – the real one.

8. Hawaiian Santa Claus Coming To Maui – December 24 Santa Claus arrives in Hawaiian style to Maluaka Beach, across the Makena Hotel! Make your way to the waters around 10 AM to witness him appear in a… well, I don’t know. It’s actually a surprise. Just think of it this way: he arrived in a canoe last year. Guaranteed it’s going to be one heck of an entrance. Once he arrives, families will be afforded the opportunity to snap some photos with him.
